Adolescent Health & Youth Development (AHYD) utilizes a variety of age appropriate curricula designed to prevent teen pregnancy by helping youth understand the importance of abstaining from sexual activity and equipping them with skills to do so.
Topics covered in abstinence education include:
- Self-esteem
- Communication
- Sexuality
- Dating violence
- Abstinence
- Sexually Transmitted Infections
- Goal-setting
- Decision-making
- Parenthood
AHYD programs focus on both genders.
Too often males are left out of the equation of teen pregnancy prevention; although national studies indicate that males initiate sex most often.
AHYD programs are free of charge.
Workshops are conducted by trained, adult facilitators and can be implemented in a variety of settings.
AHYD programs have multiple sessions.
Ideally, abstinence education programs are held weekly and consist of six to ten, one-hour sessions. However, most programs can be modified to fit the scheduling needs of the partnering organization.
AHYD program participants learn and develop skills from an array of experiences, including:
- Discussions
- Audiovisuals
- Role playing
- Structured and semi-structured activities
- Brainstorming
