In honor of National Walk to School Day, We Can! In Cobb Coalition recently sponsored a local Walking School Bus event in partnership with Safe Routes Georgia, Safe Kids Cobb County, and WellStar Health System.
The event took place at Powder Springs Elementary School on October 29, with a goal to build the student’s awareness of proper nutrition, physical activity, and pedestrian safety, and to encourage more kids to walk to school.
At the end of the school day, more than 40 students had the opportunity to participate in activities that promoted health and safety. They were each given goodie bags packed with reflectors, educational materials, pencils, and hand bands, before being lead by volunteers and staff to the sidewalk to form the Walking School Bus.
“The Walking School Bus proved to be a safe and healthy alternative to riding the bus,” said Esther Ashford, We Can! In Cobb Coordinator, Cobb & Douglas Public Health. “We are extremely pleased with the success of this event and plan to do several more throughout the school year.”
