A Picture is Worth a Thousand Words…Visual images are a powerful way to share a person’s values, thoughts and messages. They offer a unique and personal perspective for each individual to share his or her story. As part of the Community Health Improvement Plan, Cobb2020 is leading a Photovoice project to work directly with youth in Cobb County and hear their perspectives on obesity through photography. With this information, Cobb2020 will be able to push for social action and policy and community support.

What is Photovoice?

Photovoice is a project that uses photography as a way for community members to have a voice and inform decision-makers about the reality of their lives and share their insights, concerns and experiences on a community issue. Participants take on the role of a photographer to capture images that represent their thoughts on an issue and the barriers and supports found in the community that could create positive change.

How Do I Participate in Cobb2020’s Photovoice Project?

Cobb2020 is focusing on gaining a deeper understanding from Cobb’s youth and community at large on obesity, a critical and growing health problem affecting not only the health of Cobb County, but the entire nation. We want to hear from YOU and YOUR perspective on the obesity in YOUR community. Cobb2020 asks you to go out into your community and capture photos that illustrate:
  • What causes obesity, why it exists and why it’s a problem for the community
  • What are examples the community can take to control or reduce the obesity epidemic

Each photo you capture has a different meaning and story and we ask that each participant write a short commentary to display along with the photo to explain their thoughts on how that photo relates to the obesity issue.
